Our Services
Do you have a young adult or an adolescent who wants to drive? Do you want them to drive? Do you have concerns about their safety behind the wheel? Do you worry they will not be able to respond quickly in an emergency situation or will get overly stressed or anxious when learning to drive?
Do you care for someone who has been through driver education and not passed or continues to struggle with anxiety or safety while driving?
Do you have a child who has difficulty, even minor, with walking, fine motor skills, or moving their arms, legs, or head. Are you worried about their ability to control a steering wheel or pedals? Perhaps you feel confident they can manage, but just want to be sure.
En Route to Independence is here to evaluate driving skills to maximize safe independence. Our services begin with a free consultation to ensure we are a good fit for your needs. We will then schedule a comprehensive evaluation that takes place in your community. We typically come to your house for the evaluation. We will evaluate motor, visual, cognitive, and psychosocial skills to determine if the individual has the foundational skills necessary to drive. If appropriate, we will then complete an on the road evaluation with the client as a passenger or a driver. The comprehensive evaluation takes 2-3 hours to complete.
At the completion of the evaluation you and your referring medical provider will receive a full report of your performance and recommendations. If appropriate, we can also provide follow up sessions.

Community Mobility Training
Do you have a young adult or adolescent in your life who you think will not be a driver? Perhaps they don’t have an interest in driving or do not meet the legal requirements. How are they planning to access the community? Are they hoping to move out of their family home? Go to college? Have a job?
Are you an adult or do you love an adult who has recently had to stop driving and they are not sure how to continue to get into the community or get to work?
Research has backed up the common idea that a person’s ability to go into their community is important for wellbeing. As people, we are healthier physically and mentally when we can access medical appointments, social events, work, and education.
At En Route to Independence our goal is to get people into the community as safely and as independently as possible. We can evaluate a person’s cognitive (thinking), visual, and motor skills to determine if they are safe to be in the community alone or need someone with them. We can also work with each family and client to determine what methods of transportation would be the best for their situation.
Passenger Evaluations
Do you have a young adult who requires specialized seating to be safe in a vehicle? Perhaps they have always used a carseat, but the special needs carseats no longer fit. Do you have difficulty lifting your growing child into your vehicle?
Or are you an adult or love an adult who has a new medical condition that limits their safety riding in a passenger seat? Perhaps they can ride in a seat safely, but they have difficulty getting in or out of the seat.
At En Route to Independence we want all people to be able to get into their community. We can provide an assessment of your motor skills and that of the passenger. We will take into account their specific wheelchairs and anticipated future changes to determine what are the best and safest methods to ride safely in a vehicle and to get into or out of a vehicle. We are here to assist with selecting a vehicle choice that will meet your needs as we work with you and your adaptive mobility specialist.
